Nice little Goggo for sale
« on: February 26, 2008, 09:36:49 AM »
Here is a nice tidy little Goggo, Do I see a certain plywood built three wheeler in the background known to many of us? Got to be more interesting than wheelchairs.http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320221918043&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011

Dear Bobby Bubble

What is that golden orange coloured vehicle in the third photograph? Is it a candidate for mystery car of the day?

Hi Chris. At first I thought the car in the background was a 2CV based plywood bodied car built by a boat builder that many of us saw at the National a few years ago, the rally that was organised by Tony Marshal. On closer scrutiny I dont think it is that one now but cant be sure.  Looks an interesting car though doesnt it?

I saw this plywood car ages ago in Weston Park at the National. and in one of the older Rum car News.
I guess it was based on a 2 CV Citroen chassis. Thats what i was told anyway!

The orange car in the background is a Corbin Merlin: http://matt_birchard.tripod.com/cars/merlin.htm

Dear Blob

Well spotted, a Corbin Merlin. Not quite a Microcar but certainly a three wheeler and probably the only one in the UK.

The silver car is a Ginetta G20 Junior track car. Again not a Microcar, so please avert your eyes.

Funnily enough the thought "Corbin sparrow" went through my head earlier but I concluded it was far too big to be one of those. Didnt know of the existance of the Merlin! Incidently I have seen a sparrow a couple of times on the streets of Islington, dont know who owns it.

Two websites on the work-of-art cold-moulded wood three-wheeler:
http://home.clara.net/peterfrost/tryaneii.html
http://oecc.nexenservices.com/Galery/Tryane.php

As you can see it's called the Tryane II (three wheeled Dyane) and the real (yes, real) name of its builder is Friend Wood.

It's main claim to fame is that it seems to have a drag coefficient of 0.24, fairly reliably measured from coast-down testing - which probably makes it the most aerodynamic amateur-built car ever.

If anyone has a copy of RUMCAR News No.23 (sadly now out of print) Friend Wood's Tryane 2 was the featured car and describes how it was constructed.  The car is of course on the Register number R472 although I must admit I have not heard from the owner for some years now.
